White Peony. Jewelry Box with Music

"White peony” is a lacquer jewelry box from the largest manufacturer of lacquer products of the Aizu workshop, which has existed since 1590.

The box is decorated in the Maki-e technique. This is a unique technique of drawing a pattern on the varnish with powders of precious metals - silver and gold.

A peony is depicted on the box. The flower has a special symbolism in Japanese culture. It is believed that it brings well-being and prosperity. It is also a symbol of love and affection, beauty and good luck.

The jewelry box has well-thought-out compartments for the delicate storage of jewelry.

The box is based on wood.

**Aizu lacquerware is designated for traditional crafts, and produce lacquer products with a variety of techniques such as Mother of Pearl, Lacquer, Dried Lacquer, Sowing and Flower painting. The distinct characteristics of Aizu lacquerware are its auspicious designs and decorations.

• Sowing painting is a way to express the image by drawing flowers or patterns on the lacquer surface and sowing gold powder or colored powder onto it.
• Goldworm Ghoust is a technique when the black lacquer is applied on the surface, then before drying barley or rice husk is sowed all over it. Once the lacquer is cured the barley is removed. Then the silver powder is applied and polished with charcoal.
• Flower painting is a technique when oil and glazed lacquer are applied on the surface of a lacquerware. This is an advanced technology that allows to avoid marks or uneven scratches.
• Maki-e is a method that makes use of the adhesive quality of lacquer by sprinkling powder of gold, silver, or other colors like vermillion, yellow, or blue onto a lacquer drawing.
